If the nerves or pulp of your teeth become infected, the only way to save your tooth might be root canal therapy. Root canals are recommended when the nerves and roots of your teeth are infected or decayed or have sustained damaged due to cracks or other trauma to the tooth. This situation usually occurs when injury or decay reaches beyond the outer layer of enamel and deep into the tooth. If left untreated, the tooth may die and need to be extracted.
When you receive a root canal, our endodontist will open the tooth and remove the infected and injured tissues from the tooth, thoroughly cleaning it before filling it with a medicated material. The tooth is then provided with a temporary filling or crown to protect it until a custom crown can be made. After the custom crown is made, it will be placed on the tooth to complete your treatment and restore the strength, shape and function of the tooth.
While root canals have a reputation for being painful, advances in dentistry have made it possible to perform root canals much more comfortably. Anesthetic and IV sedation are available, and advanced techniques and tools minimize discomfort.
