Periodontics is one of the nine recognized fields of dental specialty and is focused on preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease and other conditions that affect the gums and soft oral tissues.
Periodontal disease is an infection caused by bacteria in plaque. In the early stages of this disease, the bacteria infect and inflame the gum tissues, causing a condition known as gingivitis. If left untreated, it develops into a more severe form of gum disease known as periodontitis, and it may lead to tooth loss, bone loss and gum recession.
Some common symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- Red, swollen and tender gums
- Gums that bleed easily
- Gum recession
- Loose teeth
- Persistent bad breath
- Pain when chewing
While gingivitis can often be brought under control and even reversed by professional treatment and improved at-home care, periodontitis often requires more involved treatment and cannot be completely cured. We strongly recommend that you visit Galliani, Mulvaney and Associates regularly for preventive care and maintain a good oral hygiene routine at home in order to help prevent gum disease and keep your mouth healthy.
If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, we have an in-house periodontist who provides treatment for gum disease and can help you regain your oral health.
