If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, one of the first treatments that may be recommended is scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing is one of the most common and effective treatments used for managing gum disease in the more moderate stages of the disease.
Scaling and root planing consists of two steps:
- Scaling — in which plaque and tartar are removed from the tooth surface
- Root Planing — in which the roots of the teeth are thoroughly cleaned to remove harmful bacteria and the tooth roots are smoothed
The goal of scaling and root planing is to halt the progression of periodontal disease before it can become severe. Most treatments can be completed without the use of anesthetic, though anesthetic and other comfort options, including IV sedation, are available should you need them. Scaling and root planing may be split up into several appointments in order to provide a thorough cleaning to each area of your mouth.
Scaling and root planing is often combined with other types of periodontal therapy, such as antibiotic treatment. Our in-house periodontist will examine your mouth to determine if any additional treatment is necessary or if scaling and root planing will be enough to prevent your gum disease from progressing further.
